Some Thoughts on the Gospel

“God is both just and loving. Therefore, his love is willing to meet the demands of his justice.” -John Piper

I have barely scratched the surface of the implications of the Gospel of Christ.

Christ Carrying the Cross

Christ Carrying the Cross (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Compared to what there is to know–I know next to nothing. The more I learn about the Gospel, the more I realize how much more there is to learn.

The Gospel lays bare my greatest need and then supplies that need. The Gospel asks my greatest questions, and then answers them.

At Calvary, I experience the crushing weight of my sin against God, and at the same time, the weight is lifted; I am set free.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deut. 6:5)

I have loved others more than God. I have loved things more than God. I have loved myself more than God. Like Peter, I have denied Him. Like His disciples, I have slept while He prayed. Like His tormentors, I have played my part in the murder of God.

Apart from the Gospel, my sin looms, my failures abound and the chasm separating me from God is impassable. I am left to face the Sovereign Judge of the universe alone. The soul that sins shall surely die, the Bible says. The wages of sin is death.

But who can fulfill God’s demands? No human being but one has ever done so.

Jesus.

The God-Man lived it out perfectly. He lived the life that I should have. He died the death that I should have. Jesus both bore the brunt of God’s wrath and exemplified the profundity of God’s mercy. The Gospel neither denies God’s right to justice nor stifles His boundless love. It is the perfect mixture of law and grace. Neither is compromised. Both are vindicated.

…so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Rom. 3:26b)

How amazing is this Gospel? How deep and wide is it? Eternity may begin to plumb its depths.

Remembering Mom

My mother left this world to be with Jesus on March 18, 2013. With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I find myself thinking of her and missing her more than I can express. So, in honor of Mother’s Day, I’m posting some excerpts from a piece I read at Mom’s memorial service in March. This post is much longer than most, please bear with me on that.

Grandma

It’s when I lie down at night that the memories come in like a flood. The earliest memories of Christmas mornings when Mom was more excited to watch us open our gifts than we were. “Don’t open your presents until you wake us up first!” she’d say. She didn’t want to miss the delight on our faces. There are memories of playing hooky from school with Mom’s full approval. We would “make a day of it,” shopping at Kresgees and afterwards eating lunch at the local burger joint. Or, letting us stay home some Tuesdays to spend time with our grandparents when they came to visit. She called it a bad case of Nana and Pampa-itis. Mom, always there, always loving, always sticking up for us, helping with school projects (more than likely last-minute and due the very next day), walking us to our girl scout meetings, wiping away our tears and making us laugh with her goofy sense of humor.

I think the most important thing mom taught me growing up was to be kind to others. She’d tell me, “Just think how you would feel if someone treated you that way.” She had a way of tenderizing our hearts and eliciting compassion for the plight of those less fortunate. Mom was our biggest fan and most loyal cheerleader. She encouraged us to do our best, to be thankful, to respect people and to love our family. I cannot think of one single moment in my life when I doubted Mom’s love for me. She loved me when I was most unlovable, and even at the height of my knuckleheadedness, Mom’s love was unconditional.

As an adult I continued to learn from Mom and came into a fuller realization of the sacrifices she made for her loved ones. She was an example in homemaking, in loving her husband and in putting others first. Mom somehow mastered the art of influencing us without being overbearing, the balance of sharing her life-experience without actually giving advice, and the feat of being involved in our lives without intruding. She welcomed our spouses into her heart fully and without wavering–no in-laws here! And, she was the quintessential grandma to her grandchildren. She told me once, “Terrie, you won’t believe it now, but you will love your grandchildren as much as you do your own kids.” (She was right, by the way.)

Graciously, God gave us many wonderful years with our Mother. Over the months before she died, Mom fought the fight of her life. She was so courageous, and true to who she was, I suspect that her bravado was more for her husband and family’s sake than for her own. But, I think it’s important to note that cancer had no victory over my mother. Her name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. She is absent from her body, but present with her Lord. Although her battle with disease was more than formidable, I am certain she see’s it now as a momentary and light affliction, nothing in comparison to the eternal weight of glory she is experiencing in heaven.

You see, Mom was loved by her husband, her kids, her grandkids, her family and her friends. But most importantly, she was beloved of God for the sake of His Son. My siblings and I had the privilege and honor of escorting our Mother into the waiting arms of Jesus. She left this world knowing she was loved and passed from death into life eternal.

It comforts me to know this is true. She is done fighting, done worrying, finished with carrying the pain and struggle of sickness. But how can this be? My mom is in Heaven at this very moment, enjoying what will be the grandest adventure above and beyond anything she could ever ask or imagine, not because she earned it, but because she was a sinner who needed a Savior (just like we all do) and cried out to Jesus for forgiveness of her sins. God graciously answered her prayer because whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. For it is by grace through faith Mom was granted so great a salvation, this was not her own doing nor by her own merit, but a gift from God. What good news this is! So think right now of the brightest and best enjoyment or the purest and lightest joy you can experience here on earth. Now, multiply that by an infinity of numbers and enlarge it by untold universes and you may get an idea of what Mom is basking in at this very moment and for an eternity of moments!

It’s been said that the degree to which you love someone is proportionate to the depth of grief you will experience when they are gone. And so we grieve. But not as those who are without hope! Very often I find myself speaking of Mom in the present tense, as if she were still alive. But, I do not correct myself because Mom is presently living in the glorious truth of God’s promises–all yes and amen in Christ Jesus! And she is with us here in a million different memories and a host of lasting joys; these a balm for our grief and a good and perfect gift coming down from the Father of Lights. It’s just like Mom to pass on to Glory before me. It will make it easier when my time comes because I know she’ll be waiting on the other side.

Where, oh death is your victory, and where, oh death is your sting?

Peace! Be Still!

Sea of Galilee

Sea of Galilee (Photo credit: Seetheholyland.net)

He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” Mark 4:40

Jesus and His disciples are out on the Sea of Galilee when a windstorm arises. The waves break over the side of the boat, threatening to capsize it. His disciples begin to panic and fear for their lives. But Jesus, undoubtedly exhausted after a long day of teaching, sleeps soundly in the stern. The disciples cry out to Him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we are perishing?”

My storms are not literal wind and waves but nonetheless real. Just like the disciples, I become anxious and distressed. I fear the storm will overcome me and that I will perish.

The fragility of His humanness on display, Jesus is tired. And even in the midst of the storm, He sleeps. But here, I relate more to the human response of the disciples. As they responded to their storm, I respond to mine. Waves of despair engulf me and the storms of life fill my boat. I cry out to Jesus, ”Don’t you care, Lord?”

Jesus hears and asks a question in return: “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Like the disciples, I have seen the Lord do many mighty and wondrous works in my life and in the lives of others. But on this day, during this storm, I am too weak to give an answer. I plead for mercy and grace.

I’m asking the Lord to still the storm.

Prayer for My Grandson

On December 24, 2012, our daughter gave birth to a 6 pound 15 inch, healthy baby boy. She named him Kash. I am beyond thrilled to be a grandmother, or as I want to be called, “Oma.” I am awed by the love I already have for this little life. I thought  my days of loving and caring for babies were gone forever, but no, God has blessed me with another opportunity to do so. I am so looking forward to being a part of my grandson’s life as he grows. I’m so excited about teaching him about Jesus! What an amazing grace this is!

Praying Hands (Dürer)

Praying Hands (Dürer) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim Your might to another generation, Your power to all those who come.  Psalm 71:18

Heavenly Father,
You already know everything about this new baby boy who is now a part of our lives. You knew the precise moment he would make his appearance and the exact number of days he will live on this earth. His personality will not come as a surprise to you. You know what his strengths and weaknesses will be, whether he will prefer carrots or peas, Oreos or chocolate chip cookies. This precious boy has been in your mind and heart for all of eternity. You have formed him and knit him together!

If we could count your thoughts toward him, they would number more than every grain of sand on every shore and in every ocean. Every hair on his head is numbered. This little baby is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Father, my prayer above all is that Kash would come to know You at a young age. Please give  him an awareness of your amazing love that stops at nothing for us, a love vast enough to include the sacrifice of Your only Son, that whoever would call upon His name would be saved.

Lavish your grace on my grandson, Lord! Equip him to be a mighty man of faith, loving and serving You for Jesus’ sake all the days of his life. Make evident to Kash the certainty of your care for him in this very uncertain world. Lord, bless Kash with understanding and wisdom beyond his years and with an early appreciation for the truth of Scripture. Let him see beyond temporary pleasures to the everlasting treasure of an inheritance that will never fade away. Let him taste the freedom that comes through a life lived in obedience to your Word. Grant Kash the adventure of walking by faith and not by sight, trusting in Jesus for everything he needs.

Father, it is a misplaced hope that Kash will live out his days free of heartache and difficulties; we know real life is not that way. So, I place my hope for Kash squarely on you. In humble expectation, I trust that whatever trials he may face; he will never face them alone. Thank you for your promise to work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

I pray that in times of joy or times of trouble, Kash would be found grateful and trusting in his Heavenly Father who loves him more than I could ever imagine and who is able to do far more abundantly than I could even ask or think.

Thank you Father for hearing my prayer.
In Jesus Name, Amen!

The Image of God and the Sanctity of Human Life

SERMON NOTES: Pastor Milton Vincent
January 20, 2013: Cornerstone Fellowship Bible Church

As Christians, how should we think about abortion? Why are we pro-life? These points make up one aspect of our perspective and how to bring our worldview to bear upon this issue.

NewBorn Baby | Imaan | Just 30 days

“To come into the womb and do violence is to do violence to the handiwork of God.”
-Milton Vincent

5 TRUTHS THAT SERVE TO SHAPE OUR APPROACH TO THE ABORTION ISSUE

1. Human beings were created in the image of God.
-James 3:9; Gen. 1:27; 9:6
-We are not mere products of time plus chance.
-Human beings are unique in that Scripture does not speak of any other part of God’s creation as being made in His image.

2. Even after the Fall, human beings still bear the image of God.
-1 Cor. 11:7; James 3:9
-The fall did not obliterate God’s image in us.
-We bear His image, but it is marred.
-For Christians, God’s image is being restored day by day.
-Non-Christians also bear the image of God.

3. Because humans bear God’s image, it is wrong to murder or mistreat a fellow human-being.
-Gen. 9:6
-To murder is to do violence to the image of God.
-James 3:9 takes this idea even further by teaching us that because others bear God’s image we should allow that to shape the way we talk to and talk about other people.
-Recognize that the image of God is in all of our fellow humans and let it influence how we treat them.
-We should not treat those who are pro-abortion or those who have had an abortion as scum because they too are image bearers.

“James 3:9 says that you don’t disdain, you don’t demonize, you don’t curse, but you offer grace…” -Tim Keller

4. Because pre-born human beings are created by God in the image of God, they are entitled to the full rights of personhood.
-Ps. 139:13-16; Lit in Hebrew v 14: On account of [Your] awe-inspiring deeds [in fashioning me] I am wonderful!
-This is healthy self-esteem coming from a Biblical Worldview. To God be the Glory!
-We are a distinguished and wonderful product of God’s creative handiwork!
-In the womb, the child is created and fashioned by God, therefore, that child is wonderful.
-To come into the womb and do violence is to do violence to the handiwork of God.
-Look at the language those who are pro-abortion use to describe the child in a mother’s womb:
blob of tissue
tissue mass
fetal infestation
non-viable tissue mass
-Eileen McDonagh says this: [The fetus is] “a massive intrusion on a woman’s body expropriating her liberty…” She goes on to say that the woman has every right to meet that intrusion with violence.
-With the passage of Roe v. Wade, a baby could be considered human, but could not claim personhood.

“A fertilized ovum evidently is human life, but is not a person.” Hansking
“The life of a human organism begins at conception. The life of a person…does not begin so early.” Peter Singer
“What is critical is personal status, not merely human status.” Joseph Fletcher
John Watson says that even 3 days after birth (after genetic testing for example) the baby can be “terminated.”

-Peter Singer says that personhood is uncertain until up to 3 years of age. (!)
-A person (according to the pro-abortion view) is a human being +
must exhibit neural activity
able to feel pain
possess cognitive function
have wants and desires for the future
be valued
have a desire to live
be capable of valuing your own existence
have a mother who has the resources to raise a baby
not be viewed as a threat to mental health

5. As Christians, we know from experience that there is forgiveness for killing an innocent human being who bears the image of God.
-2 Cor. 4:4
-In Christ, there is healing and grace for those who have taken life.
-We know this because we have participated in the murder of the only truly innocent human who perfectly displayed the image of God! Christ.
-It’s important for us to be knocked off our “high-horse” and relate to fellow sinners.

“Wither is God? I will tell you, we have killed him–you and I. All of us are his murderers.” Nietzsche (In this case, he is right).

-Is. 53:5 (lit) He was pierced from our transgressions; He was crushed from our iniquities…
-If we could remove the ”DNA” of every sin we commit, big or small, it would spell out “murderer of God.”

“Sin is deicide. Every sinner, if he could, would kill God…sin in its essence is the murder of Immanuel, God with us.”
Spurgeon

-Acts 2:33; 2:36
-Luther said, don’t try to deny that you killed the Son of God. You have the nails in your pocket.

At the very spot where we committed the sin of the murder of God, the cross, God moves toward us and offers salvation.

The Open Hand

You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.  Psalm 145:16

THE OPEN HAND

by Terrie van Baarsel

Drinking deep of deadly lies
Blind and dead to His good will
Had He not plucked me from the mire
I would be left in darkness still.

What antidote to crushing debt
Was freely giv’n by God’s own Son!
No need had I t’was left unmet
Once sin’s power had been undone.

That God would do what I could not!
That God could do what I would not!

That God would hide my life in Christ
And calm my soul so prone to fear
Then satisfy my heart’s desire
By loving me and drawing near!

Oh, the open hand of God
That opens freely and of Grace!
No clenched fist, no iron rod
No punishment meets upturned face.

A Willing Slave

LIberty

LIberty (Photo credit: Stewf)

Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 1 Peter 2:16

Here, at first gloss, is a paradoxical imperative. Live free, but live as servants. How can that be?

One of the more glorious aspects of the message of the Gospel is that it breaks the chains of sin that bind us and sets us free to serve God. In Christ, I am still a servant but have a different Master. Rather than serving sin and the flesh, I am set free to serve Christ. Freed from bare rule following, I become a most willing slave to righteousness.

Jesus frees me to cast off the filthy rags of performancism and then clothes me with the perfect cloak of His own righteousness. I dare not use this cloak as a cover-up for evil. It is far too excellent a garment for such contemptible use as that. (Shall I continue in sin that grace may abound? May it never be!)

There is no freedom apart from Christ. Write that truth on my heart, Lord! To be a slave to sin is to be free from righteousness. To be a slave to righteousness is to be free from sin. Because of Christ, and of no merit of my own, I am that willing slave to righteousness and find all the more joy in it.

May gazing at the beauty of Christ’s perfect and complete work on my behalf move me to cheerfully lay aside my own rights and puny pleasures in exchange for the freedom of willing servitude and a heart that delights in completely surrendering to Him. Let the Gospel rule in my heart and mind so that I may clearly see and by faith accept that it is finished, there is nothing more I can do to either gain or maintain my right standing and from that vantage point know real liberty.

May the will of God constrain me, and may the will of God set me free.

By His Grace and for the Gospel,
Terrie van Baarsel

Making Disciples Together

SERMON NOTES: Pastor Carlos Cuellar
December 16, 20112: Cornerstone Fellowship Bible Church

This sermon is part of our Winter Seminar: Together for the Gospel.

FOUR TRUTHS FOR MAKING DISCIPLES THAT WILL HELP US FULFILL OUR MISSION AND GREATEST CALLING

Matthew 28:16-20

We are all disciples of someone or something. We are all making disciples for someone or something.

1. Making disciples is our mission and greatest calling.
-Matt. 28:16-19a
-Jesus answered his disciples’ doubts by alluding to Daniel 7:13-14, All authority…has been given to me.
-Jesus’ response encouraged and emboldened his disciples to fulfill their mission and calling.
-God’s mission cannot fail.
-Misconceptions about the Great Commission:
that is is just for missionaries (it is for every disciple of Jesus)
that it is just for some people groups (it is global, not just local)
that it is just for unbelievers to be evangelized (it is for making and maturing disciples).

2. Making disciples involves making people followers of Jesus.
-Matt. 28:19
-Baptizing and teaching.
-Baptism is not just immersion into water (although that is important!). But immersion into a new reality, new identity, new relationship, new community, new purpose, new life, etc.
-Teach the Gospel.
-Teaching others about Christ because people who love Christ desire to obey Him.
-If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15
-Not about behavioral changes.
-Obedience being a means to the ultimate end of glorifying God.
-Luke 6:40

3. Making disciples requires evangelizing people with the transforming power of the Gospel.
-Matt. 28:10-20a: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…
-The Gospel is our greatest tool for making disciples.
-Without the Gospel, evangelizing is dangerous and does not transform people.
-Discipleship is a fight of faith to live inside of the Gospel (not performance based).
-Only the Gospel can continue to transform both new believers and more mature believers to be more like Christ.

4. Making disciples occurs in the relational context of community.
-In relationships as ordinary people living ordinary lives with Gospel intentionality.
-Making disciples:
Intentionality-We do.
Association-We pursue. (Pursuing relationships with other people, to know them.)
Impartation-We give our lives away. “Jesus’s followers do not kill to extend His kingdom, they die.” -John Piper
Demonstration-We show others how to live, not as perfect people but by humbly opening our lives to others.
-We are not only to make disciples individually, but together as a community with our varied gifts.

Our mission and greatest calling is to be disciples of Jesus and make disciples. We fulfill our mission and greatest calling with Jesus, and His mission will succeed.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matt. 28:20b

Run!

56/365 morning run

56/365 morning run (Photo credit: kharied)

I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free. (Psalm 119:32)

Oh, Christian, run hard after God’s commands. His yoke is easy and His burden, light. His path is free of snares and traps. He goes before you to smooth the way. Follow close. The way is narrow, but well-marked.

Run without fear, for His perfect love casts out fear. Run without guilt; your sins are forgiven. Run without worry; God will provide. Do you love Him? Are you called? Then run without question, for He makes all things work together for good.

Run without doubt, for He promises you wisdom. Run without thirst; living water is yours. Run without hunger; He is the bread of life. Run by faith, for by it you are justified. Run with joy, for therein lies your strength. Run in love, for that is the greatest commandment of all. Run and take heart; He has overcome the world.

Run for His sake. Run by Grace. Run that He may be glorified. Run well, and do not faint.

Run with abandon, beloved. Has He not set your heart free?

By His Grace and for the Gospel,
Terrie van Baarsel

Together For Preaching

St. Peter Preaching 06.jpg

SERMON NOTES–Pastor Mike Berry
December 9, 2012–Cornerstone Fellowship Bible Church

The following notes were taken from a sermon that was part of our CFBC Winter Seminar: Together for the Gospel.

THE VALUE OF GATHERING TOGETHER FOR THE PREACHED WORD OF GOD

Preaching is the pinnacle of worship.

Preliminaries:
-preaching is a positive thing (the word “preach” often has a negative connotation)
-preaching is a heralding of Scripture, lifting up of God and the Gospel

We need to hear God’s Word preached, together.
-This is an irreducibly complex proposition. You cannot remove any part of it and still have it be true.
-This is a need, not an option.

1. We need God.
-We have been made to have a relationship with God.
-Ps. 42:1-2 (like the Psalmist, my soul pants for God, my soul thirsts for God).

2. We need God’s Word.
-If it were not for God revealing Himself to us through His Word, we would be lost.
-He reveals Himself in love through His Word.
-John 6:68, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

3. We need to hear God’s Word.
-Hear=Listen with the attitude that it will impact our wills.
-Rom. 10:17, So faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

4. We need to hear God’s Word preached.
-Not just by ordained ministers.
-The preaching of God’s Word is sacramental, a means of Grace.
-Rom. 1:15-16, for I am not ashamed of the Gospel…
-The preaching of the Gospel is even for saved people.
-Eph. 4:11; 2:20
-If the Gospel is being preached, we are to be thankful.
-1 Tim. 5:17-18
-Preaching is not just something that happens after worship. Preaching is worship.

5. We need to hear God’s Word preached together.
-Something special happens when God’s people gather together.
-In the New Testament, we are the temple of God and He is pleased to manifest His presence when God’s people gather to hear the preached Word.
-Acts 2:41-44
-The body grows together under the preaching of God’s Word.
-The preaching of God’s Word is not mere giving and receiving of information. It is worship.
-If we don’t gather=modern Protestant Monasticism

Questions:

What if we don’t gather together to hear God’s Word preached?
-We are despising a gift of Jesus.
-We grow at different rates.

How can we take advantage of the preacher?
-Like physical exercise:
Stretch out before the preaching: prepare beforehand.
Exercise yourself during the sermon: active listening, fight to pay attention, understanding this is a spiritual activity.
Warm down after the sermon: process the sermon and talk about the message with others, i.e. Care Group.
Continue the burn: take whatever you learn and work with it.

What if the preacher isn’t Milton Vincent (or your favorite pastor, or well-known preacher, etc.).
-If the Gospel is being faithfully preached, it should not matter.

What if the preacher is wrong?
-Understand that humans have frailties.
-Compare what the preacher says to Scripture.
-Get further clarification/feedback from preacher.
-Talk to your pastor if need be.

“The mature worshiper is easily edified.”
