Peace! Be Still!

Sea of Galilee

Sea of Galilee (Photo credit: Seetheholyland.net)

He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” Mark 4:40

Jesus and His disciples are out on the Sea of Galilee when a windstorm arises. The waves break over the side of the boat, threatening to capsize it. His disciples begin to panic and fear for their lives. But Jesus, undoubtedly exhausted after a long day of teaching, sleeps soundly in the stern. The disciples cry out to Him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we are perishing?”

My storms are not literal wind and waves but nonetheless real. Just like the disciples, I become anxious and distressed. I fear the storm will overcome me and that I will perish.

The fragility of His humanness on display, Jesus is tired. And even in the midst of the storm, He sleeps. But here, I relate more to the human response of the disciples. As they responded to their storm, I respond to mine. Waves of despair engulf me and the storms of life fill my boat. I cry out to Jesus, ”Don’t you care, Lord?”

Jesus hears and asks a question in return: “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Like the disciples, I have seen the Lord do many mighty and wondrous works in my life and in the lives of others. But on this day, during this storm, I am too weak to give an answer. I plead for mercy and grace.

I’m asking the Lord to still the storm.

Prayer for My Grandson

On December 24, 2012, our daughter gave birth to a 6 pound 15 inch, healthy baby boy. She named him Kash. I am beyond thrilled to be a grandmother, or as I want to be called, “Oma.” I am awed by the love I already have for this little life. I thought  my days of loving and caring for babies were gone forever, but no, God has blessed me with another opportunity to do so. I am so looking forward to being a part of my grandson’s life as he grows. I’m so excited about teaching him about Jesus! What an amazing grace this is!

So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim Your might to another generation, Your power to all those who come.  Psalm 71:18

Heavenly Father,
You already know everything about this new baby boy who is now a part of our lives. You knew the precise moment he would make his appearance and the exact number of days he will live on this earth. His personality will not come as a surprise to you. You know what his strengths and weaknesses will be, whether he will prefer carrots or peas, Oreos or chocolate chip cookies. This precious boy has been in your mind and heart for all of eternity. You have formed him and knit him together!

If we could count your thoughts toward him, they would number more than every grain of sand on every shore and in every ocean. Every hair on his head is numbered. This little baby is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Father, my prayer above all is that Kash would come to know You at a young age. Please give  him an awareness of your amazing love that stops at nothing for us, a love vast enough to include the sacrifice of Your only Son, that whoever would call upon His name would be saved.

Lavish your grace on my grandson, Lord! Equip him to be a mighty man of faith, loving and serving You for Jesus’ sake all the days of his life. Make evident to Kash the certainty of your care for him in this very uncertain world. Lord, bless Kash with understanding and wisdom beyond his years and with an early appreciation for the truth of Scripture. Let him see beyond temporary pleasures to the everlasting treasure of an inheritance that will never fade away. Let him taste the freedom that comes through a life lived in obedience to your Word. Grant Kash the adventure of walking by faith and not by sight, trusting in Jesus for everything he needs.

Father, it is a misplaced hope that Kash will live out his days free of heartache and difficulties; we know real life is not that way. So, I place my hope for Kash squarely on you. In humble expectation, I trust that whatever trials he may face; he will never face them alone. Thank you for your promise to work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

I pray that in times of joy or times of trouble, Kash would be found grateful and trusting in his Heavenly Father who loves him more than I could ever imagine and who is able to do far more abundantly than I could even ask or think.

Thank you Father for hearing my prayer.
In Jesus Name, Amen!

The Open Hand

You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.  Psalm 145:16

THE OPEN HAND

by Terrie van Baarsel

Drinking deep of deadly lies
Blind and dead to His good will
Had He not plucked me from the mire
I would be left in darkness still.

What antidote to crushing debt
Was freely giv’n by God’s own Son!
No need had I t’was left unmet
Once sin’s power had been undone.

That God would do what I could not!
That God could do what I would not!

That God would hide my life in Christ
And calm my soul so prone to fear
Then satisfy my heart’s desire
By loving me and drawing near!

Oh, the open hand of God
That opens freely and of Grace!
No clenched fist, no iron rod
No punishment meets upturned face.

FINDING GOD IN THE WILDERNESS

Note from Terrie: A new year begins! No real resolutions this year (I have a hard time keeping them). Well, maybe just one: Read more. That’s a general enough resolution that I may find a bit of success in it. As far as Gospel Apprentice goes, I will continue to try to post 3 times a week, sermon notes, something I’ve written, and the internet mixer on Fridays. God bless your 2013. Hope to hear from you this year on Gospel Apprentice!

SERMON NOTES: Pastor Carlos Cuellar

FIVE TRUTHS GOD REVEALS ABOUT HIMSELF THAT WILL ENCOURAGE US WHEN WE ARE IN THE WILDERNESS OF LIFE

Psalm 63

1. In the wilderness God reveals Himself as God so that we desire and behold Him. Ps. 63:1-2
-God takes us into the wilderness so that we can learn that He is all we need.
-In the wilderness, God strips away all other gods so that we can see Him alone as God.
-v. 1: Oh God, you are MY God…
-God awakens our desire for Him and then reveals Himself to us.
-David could’ve looked to other things besides God (David’s own sin, Absalom, his circumstances). But David looks to God.
-In our wilderness of life, we can look to the Cross.

2. In the wilderness God reveals steadfast love toward us so that we worship Him. Ps. 63:3-4
-God takes us into the wilderness to show us how much He loves us.
-There we see God’s covenantal, relentless love.
-David learns that nothing can separate Him from the love of God.
-We don’t have to wait until we are out of the wilderness to worship God. We can worship Him, as David did, in the midst of pain and suffering.

3. In the wilderness God reveals His sufficiency so that we are satisfied in Him. Ps. 63:5-6
-We realize that God is all we need.
-We often want God plus something else. God wants us to know that He is enough.
-Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want…(no lack).

4. In the wilderness God reveals His helping presence so that we trust in Him. Ps. 63:7-8
-He has been our help (past) and will be our help (future).
-We can be comforted by His presence in the wilderness.
-Ps. 23: Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.
-When we can’t hold on any longer, He upholds us.
-Even in our darkest hour, we are in God’s hands.

5. In the wilderness God reveals His perfect sovereignty so that we hope in Him. Ps. 63:9-11
-When things go wrong, sometimes our first impulse is to scramble to control the situation.
-David knew that God is sovereign and takes comfort in that.
-God’s sovereign hand acts upon David’s enemies.
-David waits on and trusts God for future deliverance.

This Psalm (song) was written during one of the lowest points of David’s life. Let us also find Him in the wilderness and sing.

Run!

56/365 morning run

56/365 morning run (Photo credit: kharied)

I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free. (Psalm 119:32)

Oh, Christian, run hard after God’s commands. His yoke is easy and His burden, light. His path is free of snares and traps. He goes before you to smooth the way. Follow close. The way is narrow, but well-marked.

Run without fear, for His perfect love casts out fear. Run without guilt; your sins are forgiven. Run without worry; God will provide. Do you love Him? Are you called? Then run without question, for He makes all things work together for good.

Run without doubt, for He promises you wisdom. Run without thirst; living water is yours. Run without hunger; He is the bread of life. Run by faith, for by it you are justified. Run with joy, for therein lies your strength. Run in love, for that is the greatest commandment of all. Run and take heart; He has overcome the world.

Run for His sake. Run by Grace. Run that He may be glorified. Run well, and do not faint.

Run with abandon, beloved. Has He not set your heart free?

A Perseverance Not My Own

The last 4 or 5 months have been the most difficult I have ever faced.

There, I said it.

My struggles have to do with people in my life that I love very much. These trials do affect me, but what hurts worse is watching those close to me suffer. Loved ones are battling against disease, facing single motherhood, reaping life-changing consequences for sinful choices, awaiting family custody hearings, and grieving prodigal children.

I am sure I have shed more tears in the last few months than I have in my whole 57 years on this earth.

But today, Paul’s assurance to the Philippians, written so many years ago, has encouraged this believer as well. In chapter 1 verse 6, he writes:

And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

In the darkest hour, God never fails to light the way with Grace. Grace that works itself out in encouraging words written centuries ago that remind us: God is still at work not only in me, but in the people I love.

Our stories are not fully written yet!

Our lives get messy. In fact, life stinks sometimes. There have been moments over the last several weeks that I have positively squirmed under the pressure. I have let it get me down. At times, I have felt downright hopeless.

That’s why the eternal perspective we enjoy by virtue of the Gospel is of such great importance. Without it, our hope would wither and die.

Thank God for assuring me today that even in the mess we make of our lives, He is still working. He will complete what He started. I will hold on to that truth as tightly as I can, all the while knowing that when darkness overwhelms me and I let my grasp slip, that the perseverance of the saints of God lies not in their own ability to hold on, but in the power of the Gospel of Grace.

Hopeful

“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus Name.”
-Edward Mote (1797-1874)

Hope.

Such a short word, but for the Christian, pregnant with promise!

Our hope is alive. This hope is no desperate gasp of a dying man. But rather, ours is a hope quickened by the merciful hand of God, causing us to be born again to a living hope and the assurance of an inheritance that is  “imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”

This is no static hope, but a confident movement toward trusting in the promises of God. Our hope joins hands with faith and dances with bold conviction; it is a joyful expectation of things hoped for and not yet seen.

Our hope is tangible. Our fathers in the faith heard Him speak, saw Him with their own eyes, and touched Him with their own hands. They ate with Him, lived life with Him, learned from Him, and prayed with Him. No ethereal hope here. Jesus of Nazereth was a man, though no ordinary man. ”The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory…”

Ours is a hope tethered to eternity. Immense in scope and eternal in perspective, this kind of hope will not disappoint. The hope of Christ is ours today and will ever outlive itself in the ages to come. Lay your dead hope at the foot of the cross and watch Christ breathe into it Life Everlasting. “Do not lose heart…for this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

Our hope is real. Unlike the “water” on a hot asphalt road that is always just out of reach, this hope is no mirage. It quenches real thirst and imparts real life. Those who place their faith in Christ build a foundation of hope upon the bedrock of Gospel Truth. This hope is as solid as the wood of the cross upon which our Savior died.

Oh, Christian, in the economy of Hope you are a very rich man, indeed!.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.   Romans 15:13

Grace Community

Sermon Notes: Pastor Milton Vincent
August 12, 2012: Cornerstone Fellowship Bible Church

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8

There is a sense in which the grace of God is a currency or commodity. Paul wants to teach us how to do commerce with the grace of God.

FOUR TRUTHS TO HELP US RICHLY EXPERIENCE THE GRACE OF GOD IN COMMUNITY WITH ONE ANOTHER:

1. We each have graces given to us.
-Rom. 12:3, 6
-We have been given ”little graces” (gifts) according to the “big grace” God has given us.
-These graces are part of the treasury of grace from which our brothers and sisters are to draw.

2. The graces we have been given are different from one another.
-Rom. 12:6
-They differ in categories, levels, combinations, manners given (duration and occasion), opportunities, manners of expression.
-There are thousands of shades and hues and combinations of gifts, all by Divine design.

3. The different graces we have (and don’t have) are determined by Grace.
-Rom. 12:3
-It is grace that determines our gifts, gifts we have and gifts we don’t have.
-By the grace of God, whatever deficits you have in gifts puts you in need of your brothers and sisters.
-We sometimes find ourselves in divinely appointed circumstances that make us realize our deficits and reach out to our brothers and sisters to draw from them and the treasury of grace in them.
-Paul did not do everything alone, he had Silas, John Mark, Barnabus, etc. He took his brothers with him.
-Our gift deficits are an expression of the grace of God just as our giftedness is.
-We actually have all the gifts because we experience them all in relationship with our brothers and sisters.
-In community with one another, we possess all the gifts.
-Technically, the gifts we do have are not our own, but they belong to our brothers and sisters.

4. We each should exercise the graces given to us.

A. If given the grace of prophecy, exercise it according to the faith.
-Two kinds of prophecy, revelatory and non-revelatory.
-Acts 11:27-28; 21:10-11; Acts 15:32
-”Must correspond to the rule of faith as proclaimed by the apostles and believed, confessed and taught in the churches.” (In my notes, I missed the name in order to cite this quote. Sorry.)

B. If given the grace of service, exercise it by serving.
-People with this gift are skilled in discerning needs, both material, physical and spiritual and they find pleasure in meeting those needs.

C. If given the grace of teaching, exercise it by teaching.
-Instructing in doctrine and practice.
-In a sense, exercising spiritual authority.
-People with this gift are skilled in discerning where there are errors and bringing the word of God to bear on them.

D. If given the grace of exhortation, exercise it by exhorting.
-lit: to call from along one’s side, to comfort, encourage, challenge, motivate, rouse, rebuke.
-Not as an authority figure, but by coming alongside someone who needs encouragement, etc.

E. If given the grace of giving, exercise it with liberality.
-People with this gift are skilled at discerning needs and meeting them.
-Are often gifted at generating income and resources in order to meet needs.
-This does not mean that the person must be rich to exercise this gift.
-Finds joy in giving time, resources, income.

F. If given the grace of leadership, exercise it with diligence.
-lit: to stand before.
-Someone who can see the giftedness of others and use and direct their gifts.
-All husbands have this gift to one degree or another in order to lead their households.

G. If given the grace of mercy, exercise it with cheerfulness.
-Showing sympathy and compassion to those who are suffering.
-Gladly helping and sustaining those who are suffering through a time of dire need.

Jesus, the Man

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… Isaiah 53:4

The Deity of Christ is an important core doctrine that separates Christianity from the false religions of the world. However, when I am feeling overwhelmed by the suffering and sorrow that this world so often has to offer, I am comforted to think about the humanity of Christ.

Jesus, the man.

There is no darkness, no pain, no suffering, no hunger or thirst that Jesus did not experience. There is no hatred, no rejection, no hurt that Jesus is not personally acquainted with. He understands the depths of my grief, the magnitude of my sorrow and the scope of my heartache. Jesus owned all the weaknesses of man, except sin.

I am blessed to have friends and family who have lifted me in prayer, wept beside me in sorrow and helped me when I most needed it. For that I am thankful.

However, I am most grateful that because of this God-Man, I do not walk alone.

How People Get Saved

Sermon Notes-Pastor Milton Vincent
July 1, 2012-Cornerstone Fellowship Bible Church

Text: Romans 10:9-15

The Essence of Salvation: God gives a person righteousness, deliverance, and satisfaction in Jesus. (See Romans 10:9-11)

Righteousness: Salvation is God giving to a poor, lost sinner, righteousness. His record of sin is wiped clean and he is clothed in the perfect righteousness of Christ.

Deliverance: God saves from something, from sin’s guilt and power, condemnation, wrath, hell, and a meaningless and hopeless life.

Satisfaction: We are sure to be let down if we put our confidence in things and people. God promises that when He is done doing what He wants to do in us through His Son, we will not be ashamed that we have put our trust in Jesus.

A FIVE-FOLD EXPLANATION AS TO HOW IT IS THAT HIS SALVATION GETS TO PARTICULAR PEOPLE

1. This salvation comes to those who call upon Christ.
…for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing His riches on all who call on Him. For everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. (Rom. 10:12-13)
-We don’t just wake up one day saved, delivered, justified.
-It is people who cry out to Jesus who get saved.
-Salvation does not come from within, but from without and only through Jesus.
-Salvation is for those who stop calling upon anything or anyone else besides Jesus.

2. Those who call upon Christ do so because they believe in Christ.
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed?… (Rom. 10:14)
-Calling on Christ without believing would be meaningless.
-Belief is the fuel that drives the prayer of calling upon the Lord.
-Belief in Jesus is more than a bare believing of facts about Him.
-It is seeing a need for the Savior and withdrawing trust from themselves, anything or anyone else and putting trust in Jesus.
-It is believing and trusting that Jesus has the power and desire to save.

3. Those who believe in Christ do so because they have heard the gospel of Christ.
…And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard?… (Rom. 10:14)
-This is God’s plan- through hearing.
-See Acts 11:14; 1 Cor. 1:21
-Hearing words, a message, is the means God uses to bring people to belief in His Son.
-Not a list of do’s and don’t's, but a piece of news that comes to us about Jesus.

“Faith indeed comes of hearing. Do not imagine men will be saved any other way.” -Newell

4. Those who hear the gospel of Christ do so because someone preached it to them.
…And how are they to hear without someone preaching? (Rom. 10:14)
-Preacher=Heralder, someone who announces a public message.
-Herald: someone who acts as a messenger of a king or commander.
-”…the herald announces no word more or less than he is bidden to announce and alters and changes nothing.” -Lenski
-There are many who don’t like certain parts of Scripture. but it’s not our luxury to pick and choose and preach only the parts that we like.

“The essence of other religions is advice; Christianity is essentially news.” -Tim Keller, The King’s Cross

5. Someone preaches the gospel to them because he is commissioned by God to do so.
And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Rom. 10:15)
-The sovereign God who is utterly sovereign in salvation has so structured things that He uses people to preach the Good News.
-God is the sending agent. He is behind it all!
-How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! This comes from Isaiah 52. The Jews imagining the heralds running over the mountains to make the announcement that their Babylonian captivity is over. The dusty feet of the heralds would be beautiful to them.
-The idea is, how beautiful are the goings of those who bring the good news of the Gospel.
-We go to bring the Good News of salvation because we are sent by God.
-See Mark 16 and Matt. 28.
